FCDO also warns that 'entry into the Republic of Cyprus through any airport or port in the north (such as Ercan Airport) is considered illegal by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.' If you enter via the north, you may be denied entry to the south or face difficulties in other EU countries like Greece. FCDO advises using designated crossing points and carrying a valid passport at all times. The overall FCDO advice for the island of Cyprus is 'See travel advice' (Green/No advisory against travel), but with these specific caveats for the northern regions.

Political Sensitivity/Property Disputes

The traveller should stay in reputable, well-known hotels in North Nicosia or Kyrenia with 24/7 staffed receptions. Evacuation will be triggered by significant civil unrest or a breakdown in the Green Line crossing protocols. The decision will be made by Chatham House ELT in consultation with AIG Crisis Management. The primary evacuation route is overland through the Green Line to the Republic of Cyprus (Larnaca Airport). If the Green Line is closed, evacuation would be via Ercan Airport to Turkey.
If Nicosia becomes unstable, relocation to Kyrenia (Girne) is advised as it is a less politically charged coastal area. If the entire northern territory becomes high-risk, a move to the UN Buffer Zone or seeking temporary refuge in the British High Commission (South) via a designated crossing is the priority.
In the event of a sudden border closure or localized unrest, hibernate in the pre-booked hotel. Ensure a 3-day supply of bottled water and shelf-stable food is kept in the room. Maintain contact with AIG and Chatham House base every 4 hours.
Daily check-in via WhatsApp group at 09:00 and 18:00 UK time. Additional check-ins required: 1. Upon arrival at Larnaca/Paphos. 2. Upon crossing the Green Line. 3. Upon arrival at the hotel in Northern Cyprus. 4. Nightly confirmation of return to accommodation.

In case of medical emergency, the traveller must contact AIG first to ensure coverage and coordination.
